change me

Halloween has made me realize just how deep people's repressed desires run. Have you noticed how many girls dress up in super-slutty outfits for Halloween? Usually posing as the "sexy cop" or "french maid" or whatever - but the end result is the same. And guys always dress up as "the pimp" or as a woman. It's so obvious that it's hilarious. Anyway, this picture made me think about it - things in this picture strike me as "cool" - his shoes, the chain, and the big rolled pants. I like that the picture is about personality - about how what we wear represents not necessarily what we are, but what we want to be...

Hulk Hogan

I met Hulk Hogan today. His daughter, Brooke Hogan, is putting out a record through my work so he came in. It was a little surreal. Remember the Glorious Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.)??? I can't even say how many nights my sister and I acted out those wrestling matches.

Anyway, speaking of work, I got promoted, and I picked this picture because it looks a little bit like the corporate world that I'm leaving: what I especially love about this photo is that you can see the vein popping in his forehead. Dare I say it's a little Hulk Hogan meets Corporate America?

a little rock n roll

I'm feeling a little rock n roll today, so I'm putting up a picture that's LOUD like me.

Kudos to anyone who knows what band this is (I had to ask Jason).

bed, oh bed

Ever have those few days where you can NOT catch up? I'm in that black hole of time right now. That's why there was no blog yesterday. I don't mind rushing through meals, or the constant running around, or being in traffic. I just miss those few moments where you get to lie in bed and be totally lazy.

prestige

I saw The Prestige this weekend, having no idea what it was about. I'm a huge Christian Bale fan, but the biggest perk of the movie was definitely seeing DAVID BOWIE do a great Nicolai Tesla. I don't think I've seen him in a movie since Labyrinth. It was awesome. So I've been thinking about magic and science a lot, which brought me to this photograph. It looks like magic to me. And in fact, after thinking about it, I realized that what photographers do is really a form of magic - turning an instant into forever, transporting you from somewhere you never were to somewhere you can experience and imagine.

wrong holiday

I always like to leave something happy for the weekend, and to me animals and kids are about the happiest things that exist in the world. I love the little guy in this photo. I think it's a groundhog, right? Just in time for Halloween. What I love about this photo most is the coloring. Something about it adds a tinge of mystery...

so what's the dumpster then?

I think I'm feeling a little sappy today. When I saw this photograph, I thought that the trees look like two people to me. And the fact that one is cloaked is like a metaphor for what most relationships are really like - one person in a relationship always seems to be the one holding back. But I can't figure out what the dumpster is in my metaphor of love...

short but fun

My blog (and Jason's art, in a way) got a review on Critique My Blog. Anyone who has a blog should write him - he does the reviews and posts them really fast.

A little early

Today everything is that Halloween orange color. A co-worker brought pumpkin-shaped cookies. People really love holidays, huh? It's a good two weeks away! Well, I have no costume planned. I refuse to do the ghetto costumes any more (i.e. flower child or street walker or goth girl). But in the name of Halloween, here's a picture that says "Scary Haunted House" to me. I hate clowns, and I hate dolls, and when they're together that's the worst of all.

oh, hands

I had an odd experience today - I developed a crush on someone's hands. I was at a private concert by a tribal jazz group and from where I was sitting, I couldn't see the keyboard player's face, only his hands. I love the way pianists touch the keys, it's so gentle and so exact. This picture seemed perfect for the moment.

even rock stars get wrinkles

I hung out with a friend yesterday, and as she was talking I realized her age was starting to show in her face. And we're about the same age. It wasn't even wrinkles or anything. It was some unexplainable oldness. Here's Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth - check out her upper arm. It's not wrinkly, really, but it's old...Well, at least Jason captured her looking every bit the rock star, even at 50.

madness

Planes crashing into buildings (again), threats of nuclear weapons shot at us, does it seem like the world is going a little bit mad? I saw this cool photo project that I have to applaud in the name of acceptance. And here's Jason's contribution, in a way.

a wild moment

This picture is exactly what I feel like doing every day at work...but don't. I love that the wall and the carpet, even the girl's outfit, are very bland, and then she has one glimmer of brightness. It's like a small rebellion.

Strangely seductive

If you've seen the movie "Dig!" you know that this guy (Anton from the Brian Jonestown Massacre) is a complete nut. If you haven't seen the movie, it's a must for anyone who likes to see behind-the-scenes rock life. Anyway, fully knowing that Anton is drugged into insanity, I still think this picture is...well...a little sexy. But strange things are becoming sexy these days. Someone today told me they thought Hillary Clinton is sexy. Not sure about that one. Yes, she's brilliant and my hero, but imagining her in lingerie makes me cringe...

screwed

I love how plaintive this picture is. It's just putting the facts out there: this situation sucks. Plain and simple. I've totally been there, too. I've run out of gas once in my life. It's such a stupid thing to do. I was honestly two blocks from the gas station. I've never blown out a tire, but I've slid on a patch of black ice into the middle of the freeway (grass, luckily). Anyway, this picture is a story, and one that we all have. That's why I like it.

that elusive cure

Today, in honor of national breast cancer awareness day, I thought I'd post this picture of a woman smoking. While I have to admit it's a cool photo, I also want to say that I have discovered the cure for cancer: let's stop putting carcinogens out into the world. Have you ever been at the grocery store and seen a sign that warned you that materials known to cause cancer were used at that location? What? I know it's not that simple, but it would be a great first baby step.
